Message from Cllr Alex Dale - Leader of NEDDC

Dear all

I'm sure you will have heard by now, that the whole of Derbyshire has been placed in the top level of Covid restrictions (Tier 3 - Very High Alert).

On Wednesday, I joined all other Derbyshire Council Leaders in urging the Prime Minister to put the impact on our fragile hospitality sector at the core of Government's thinking over the tiering system and to ask for Derbyshire to be placed in Tier 2.

The news therefore will come as a real disappointment I'm sure to many of us and particularly so after a reduction in case numbers across the district.

We will continue to urge Government for a review of our restrictions at the earliest possible opportunity in order to move down the tiers and do whatever else we can to support and be a voice for our businesses and residents affected by the restrictions.

However, to keep everyone safe and help us to move out of Tier 3, we are urging everyone to continue showing their resolve and keep up their hard work to stay safe and reduce the spread of the virus.

While we are pleased our three Leisure Centres will be allowed to re-open when lockdown ends on Wednesday 2 December, some activities, such as group exercise classes, unfortunately won't be allowed to take place.

Please therefore keep a look out on our website, social media and the Centres' Facebook pages for updates.

There is also information on the Government's website about what you can and can't do in Tier 3, so please make sure you are aware of the rules.

I'd also urge everyone to follow the Government's advice if they choose to get together with others between 23 and 27 December.

I would echo the message from Derbyshire's Director of Public Health, Dean Wallace, in urging residents to be cautious about the risk of spreading Coronavirus when rules are relaxed at Christmas.

We all want nothing more than to be with those we love at this special time of the year, but please remember to carefully weigh up the risks before meeting other people, follow the rules and stay safe.

Just a reminder that for businesses affected by the pandemic we have grants available to help, whether they were forced to close or able to stay open, so if you know of anyone struggling, please urge them to visit our website for more information. We also have links to other organisations and funding they might find useful.

We are also continuing to support our most vulnerable residents through this second wave of infection, and are ready to provide pharmacy and food supplies if required, so please remind people they can fill in the form on our website or give us a call if they need help.

I'll be in touch again with further updates on our response to the pandemic and on other issues.

In the meantime, please continue to do all you can to help us slow down the spread of the virus - wash hands, cover face, make space #DoitforDerbyshire.

Best wishes

Alex
